Learn about two community colleges—Cascadia Community College and IECC—that have developed not only an institution-wide assessment process, but also a culture to support it. Presenters will describe how they gained momentum for their respective assessment initiatives, their process for defining and refining their outcomes and plans, and the mechanisms they have in place to continue to scaffold these initiatives with concrete support and professional development. Facilitators will also offer some concluding suggestions for developing a culture of assessment based on other emerging trends in the field.

Guest Presenters:

Susi Hamilton joined Cascadia Community College as its Director for Institutional Effectiveness in 2008. She has worked in higher education for almost 2 decades leading design teams for multiple campus-wide tools used to improve student learning and institutional effectiveness. She is relied on for generating and analyzing relevant information that supports college-wide, evidence-based planning, assessment, and decision-making. She has developed solutions to assist in meeting accountability standards, such as a 360-degree Program Review, electronic based learning outcomes and accreditation processes, and proven methods that provide a continuous flow of planning, assessment, feedback, reflection, and improvement.

Prior to working in the Washington state system, Susi served as Assistant Registrar at McMurry University in Texas. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration, and a Master’s in Education from the University of Washington Bothell with an emphasis in assessment.

Nixie Hnetkkovsky is a life science instructor at Frontier Community College in Fairfield, IL, in the Illinois Eastern Community College District. She has been the Director of Student Learning Assessment since 2009 and was a Faculty Coordinator of Assessment from 2007 - 2009. IECC participated in the Higher Learning Commission's Assessment Academy from 2007- 2014. In the Academy, IECC developed a comprehensive assessment program including General Education, Program, Course, and Co-Curricular Assessment. IECC used several methods of communication which was vital to engage all aspects of the institution in assessment. Communication, collaboration, and technology have helped a culture of assessment evolve at IECC which ensures student success.
