Collecting Data, Creating Information: Using Course Evaluation Results for More

The collection of student feedback is only one part of the overall course evaluation process. Connecting Course Evaluations to University Level Outcomes

This session will discuss how Baldwin Wallace University began with the institutional mission statement in mind when developing their course evaluation instrument.We created six standardized statements to be included on every course evaluation. In this session, we will review how we created those mission-driven statements, and share how results that are linked to university-level outcomes and benchmarked across departments.

Strategies for Success: Transition from Paper to Online Using Campus Labs with IDEA

Tennessee Tech University transitioned from paper surveys to online course evaluations with IDEA. We spent a year marketing and gaining input from campus administrators, faculty, and students. Following a successful implementation, the new system has advanced our teaching and learning environment by enlivening the use of results to improve teaching. We have also changed the approach of our students, who now take these assessments more responsibly. In this session we will share our success story.

Course Evaluation Response Rates: Lessons Learned

The transition to an online version of course evaluations at Walsh University resulted in an initial decline in overall response rates, yet a sizeable number of courses received a response rate of 80-100%. The presenters will share insights gained from a survey in which they queried faculty with high response rates to uncover success strategies to be replicated and shared.

Custom Reporting: Discovery and User Feedback

Custom reporting has the power to provide evidence-based guidance for a lot of important decisions on campus. Data In, Data Out: The Process of Managing Uploads and Distributing Results

The Stony Brook University Course Evaluations Team will highlight their processes for managing the course evaluation workflow. We’ll discuss how we manage dozens of uploads each semester with hundreds of course and instructor exceptions, automatically adding custom attributes and generating/automatically uploading the file sets. We’ll also look at the post-evaluation workflow in which we take the evaluation results, flag and clean up inappropriate responses, and finally publish them to our campus portal.

Jumping in with Both Feet: A Process-changing Experience

Appalachian State University will share their experience from piloting CoursEval in 2015 to purchase in 2017. The initial process was managed by the Learning Technology Services department, but in early 2018, management of the course evaluation process transferred to Institutional Research and Planning. This session will cover the transitional process that took place and the adoption of a more automated use of CoursEval.

The Impact of Teaching & Learning Centers on Faculty Development (and Evaluation?)

Teaching and learning centers (and professionals) often focus on resources, scholarship, and faculty development with the intention of improving experiences in the classroom. Student perceptions are one metric that can provide actionable data by capturing how students respond to our teaching decisions and whether they recognize their own learning. In our panel, we’ll discuss how T&L centers can function and unpack some of the ways faculty development is tackled on their campuses. We’ll also discuss the larger question about the relationship between faculty evaluation and faculty development.
