Strategies for Developing a Rubric Instrument

In this session we will focus on the process of developing a rubric instrument customized to your needs. Several different types of rubric models will be shared, and we will discuss strategies for developing rubric dimensions, composing dimension descriptions, and selecting an appropriate scale. Additionally, an institution that has developed rubrics for use on their campus will share best practices.

About the co-presenters:

Mike Severy is the Director of Student and Involvement and Leadership at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke and views his work through a lens of leadership development believing that students are developed over time through a series of meaningful experiences. He has presented at a variety regional and national conferences and has written for several blogs and publications. You can connect with Mike through http://about.me/mikesevery.

Dr. Gladys Palma de Schrynemakers, Associate Provost at Long Island University Brooklyn, Co-Chairs the Campus Outcomes Assessment Committee. Dr. Schrynemakers works with Administration, Student Life Professionals, faculty and academic departments on accreditation, retention, institutional effectiveness, and strategic priorities and has served on accreditation teams for New York State Department of Education and Middle States Commission of Higher Education. She directs Collegiate Science Technology Program (CSTEP) and Principal Investigator (P.I.) for Predominantly Black Institutions (PBI) Undergraduate STEM Grant, both of which prepare undergraduate minority and economically disadvantaged students to enter the STEM fields. She is the P.I. for the New York State’s Smart Scholars Early College High School (SSECHS) program which helps create early college high schools where students earn college credits. The program is specifically geared toward groups of students who historically have not had access to college. Dr. Schrynemakers chairs the statewide (SSECHS) Assessment Committee. During her 22-year association with the University, she has secured over 5 million dollars in grants, teaches social science research in the University Honors Program, and has published frequently on theory and practice of constructing knowledge.
