Educational Intelligence Should Be In Your Vocabulary

This article introduces the concept of educational intelligence, which is defined as “leveraging data at multiple points across the student lifecycle to make intelligent decisions that positively impact student outcomes.” Embracing a holistic perspective, educational intelligence focuses on the student lifecycle – from “pre-inquiry through post-graduation” – and is informed by large amounts of connected data. By making campus-wide data more accessible and portable, higher education leaders can gain a comprehensive understanding that will both improve the the student experience and fulfill institutional goals.

Although similar to business intelligence, educational intelligence is unique due to the nature of education. In education, the dual focus is enhanced business processes and improved student outcomes. The article concludes with three guiding points: tearing down the data wall, focusing on actionable insights informed by data, and valuing the “fruit of the action” with an emphasis on student outcomes.
